Another set of the DCI irons designed with the improved player in mind, Titleist DCI 990 Irons have a high-performance blade design that includes a variable muscle back cavity to give a solid, traditional feel along with increased workability and uniform performance. The unique design lets improved players hit long irons higher and more easily without having to sacrifice shot workability. It also lets them hit short irons with a flatter and more controlled ball flight.
Titleist DCI 990 irons are cast from heat-treated and homogenized 431 stainless steel. The DCI 990’s flat topline, soft profile, shallow blade, and low progressive offset give it a traditional setup appearance. The heads of Titleist DCI 990 irons are taper tip ones.
The high-performance blade of the DCI 990 is meant for golfers who seek the ultimate in feel, workability, shot control, and overall performance. Meanwhile, the variable muscle back cavity increasingly biases weight throughout the set to lower the center of gravity in the long irons as well as to promote playability and higher ball flight. A higher center of gravity in the short irons results in lower and more controllable ball flight. Weight distribution in Titleist DCI 990 irons focuses more mass behind the striking area for an unrivaled solid feel.
On the long irons, progressive sole radius on the leading edge is smaller and sharper to promote crisp contact, while on the short irons, this progressive sole radius is larger and more blunt to cut back on excessive digging. Their soft profile, progressive blade lengths and sole radius, and a flatter, thinner topline provide Titleist DCI 990 irons with a consistently traditional setup appearance all throughout the set.
Traditional V grooves plus scoreline spacing allow for the optimum degree of shot workability, distance and trajectory control, and a consistent spin performance. The grip for Titleist DCI 990 irons is Titleist Velvet Victory Full Cord grip by Golf Pride, and a set of DCI 990s is also available in left hand. The shafts are True Temper Dynamic Gold steel (124 grams each) with Regular, Stiff, or X-Stiff shaft flex and a high flex point. Additional options are obtainable through the Titleist custom department.
The DCI 990 was produced from 1999 to 2000. Titleist, which is headquartered in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, serves serious and recreational golfers’ needs with its full line of golf equipment that includes irons, drivers, Scotty Cameron putters, Vokey wedges, fairways, and golf balls. On the PGA Tour and most of the international competitive tours, Titleist is well represented.
