Titleist AP1 Irons are considered by golf experts as groundbreaking, technology-infused irons from the usually traditional brand. It maintains the desirable Titleist feel but in terms of the dual cavity and multi-material design, they are radically different from the past irons.
Titleist AP1 irons are made from 431 stainless steel and have a tungsten nickel box that is located in the back and sole of the iron. The box wraps the lower cavity and is intended to lower weight while giving golfers both a good feel and some added forgiveness.
With lower center of gravity, players have a higher launch angle, more ball speed and what Titleist claims as a consistent spin performance across the hitting area. The upper cavity, on the other hand, is above the elastomer cushion, which is adorned with a metallic cavity plate. For increased forgiveness, weight is pushed to the perimeter.
The cavities of the new and improved Advanced Performance (AP)1 irons are separated by a central cross member and elastomer cushion to assure rigidity at the back of the impact area of the thin clubface. They still have lesson vibration for increased feel. The wider sole of the Titleist AP1 irons provides playability from different lies without excessive bouncing or digging, which means decent shots can still be made even if you hit the ball a little fat. This is specifically helpful for those who don’t constantly make the best swings.
When the Titleist AP1 irons came out and pictures were all over the Internet, a lot of people thought they looked unpleasant. The appearance looked really different from the usual Titleist Irons. Those who were able to actually buy and see the irons had mixed reactions.
Some said they look nice and they don’t look as big or chunky. Others still think they look too busy graphically.
In terms of performance, Titleist AP1 irons have a nice amount of forgiveness and some feedback. Golfers who are planning to get these should remember that they will not magically correct slice or lower the handicap. As tough as all Titleist irons, the AP1, even if they have some serious technology, will still smack you around if you fail to make a decent pass at the ball. Also, keep in mind that they are stronger lofted irons. With the blend of the slightly stronger lofts and the True Temper Dynamic Gold High Launch shafts, they can produce a bit more carry distance than other irons.
If you plan to buy to get your Titleist AP1 irons, research will be very helpful but you should not only focus on reviews or photos. Take time to check them out at golf equipment shops so you can get a firsthand experience.
